Member Alert: Be Aware of Impersonation Emails

Dear Members,

NMMA has received reports of unauthorized emails being sent to non-member companies in which individuals are impersonating NMMA staff and using NMMA and Discover Boating event names in an attempt to solicit business or payment.

While these communications are not being sent from NMMA systems, we want to make members aware and share a few simple steps to help identify legitimate NMMA communications:

  • Official NMMA staff emails are sent from @nmma.org or @discoverboating.com email addresses.
  • Be cautious of unexpected messages requesting payment, banking information or other sensitive information, particularly when sent from an unfamiliar email address.
  • Before responding to an unusual request, check the sender’s full email address rather than relying on the display name.
  • Avoid clicking links, opening attachments or sending payment if you are uncertain about the source of a message.
  • If you receive a questionable communication related to NMMA or one of our events, contact your regular NMMA representative or use the contact information listed on the official NMMA or show website to confirm its legitimacy.

We encourage members to remain attentive and share this information with colleagues who handle event participation, purchasing, invoicing or payments. If you have questions, please contact Ashley Locklin, NMMA’s Director of Membership at [email protected].
