According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) rose 2 percent from October 2016 to October 2017. Over the last month, from September to October 2017, the all items index increased 0.1 percent.

The index for all items less food and energy, which accounted for 78.7 percent of consumer spending in September, rose 1.8 percent over the past year. The energy index, which had a relative importance weight of 7.7 percent, increased 6.4 percent over the last 12 months. The index for food, which accounted for the remaining 13.6 percent of consumer spending, rose 1.3 percent.

All the major energy component indexes rose over the past 12 months. The gasoline index, which accounted for 3.7 percent of consumer spending, increased 10.8 percent over the year. The index for natural gas advanced 3.2 percent. The electricity index increased 2.0 percent.

Within the all items less food and energy category, the shelter index, which had a relative importance weight of 33.7 percent, rose 3.2 percent over the past year. The index for motor vehicle insurance increased 8.2 percent, but several transportation indexes declined over the year, including new vehicles, used cars and trucks, and airline fares.

Within the food index, food at home, which had a relative importance weight of 7.8 percent, rose 0.6 percent over the past year. The index for meats, poultry, fish, and eggs rose 1.5 percent over the same period. The indexes for cereals and bakery products and for dairy and related products both declined over the past year. The index for food away from home, which was 5.8 percent of spending, increased 2.3 percent over the past year.
