NMMA Engineering Standards Department manages NMMA Certification. The NMMA Certification program is the premier product certification program for boats, yachts, boat trailers, personal watercraft (PWC), and marine oils in Canada and the United States. It's our mission to help boat manufacturers and marine manufacturers succeed in providing safer products for the boating industry.
NMMA Boat & Yacht Certification helps manufacturers ensure their boats are built to industry standards set forth by the American Boats & Yacht Council (ABYC). NMMA also actively promotes boat certification through its Discover Boating consumer outreach efforts to help manufacturers promote compliance of their boat brands with these industry standards to the public.
NMMA Certified boats, yachts, boat trailers, and components set the standard for reliability, safety, and quality throughout the world.
Our global team of inspectors possess in-depth knowledge of the marine industry, with expertise in manufacturing, operations, engineering, and quality assurance. They are well-acquainted with both domestic and international standards to make sure all relevant standards are addressed during the certification process.
NMMA also requires that the following components be NMMA Type Accepted when used on NMMA certified boats and NMMA certified yachts:
- Bilge blowers
- Bilge pumps
- Fuel hoses
- Fuel tanks
- Horns
- Navigation lights
- Steering helms
- Steering wheels

The new Engineering Certification Software provides an improved user interface which makes submitting and modifying existing applications more efficient and transparent. Members can electronically sign documents through DocuSign eliminating the previous manual process. The software also allows members to upload required documents and provides automatically generated reminders to complete various tasks required to achieve Certification.
